I would like to share an excellent article entitled Exercise-Based Performance Enhancement and Injury Prevention for Firefighters: Contracting the Fitness- and Movement- Related Adaptations to Two Training Methodologies.  It was published in the September 2015 issue of the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research.

The article compares the efficacy of Movement Guided Fitness and Conventional Fitness over a 12 week training period. The goal was to prevent injury and improve performance within populations that are exposed to highly variable task demands. To quote the author, ".... the finding that firefighters who received movement-oriented exercise instruction and feedback were less likely to use 'risky' movement behaviors in unrehearsed tasks is promising."

I am John Watson, a functional fitness trainer and owner of Movement Training by Design.  Although you may be physically fit, there may be room for improvement in how WELL your body moves.  Movement is a combination of flexibility, strength, endurance and power. The purpose of functional fitness training is to help your muscles learn to work together. When muscle groups are exercised together, they learn to perform everyday activities with efficiency. Muscle groups which have been strengthened work efficiently, make it easier to lift, pick up low objects, and move without injury.

There are five movement patterns to master. They include hinging, rotational movements, pushing/pulling, lunging, and squatting. People of all ages and any fitness level can be trained to move better, with strength and confidence. Students start by using their own body weight for resistance and weights may be added later in the training. Call 860-970-8575 for more information.
