Do You Golf?

Improve your golf swing with Movement Training by Design.  Certified functional movement trainer John Watson can improve the way you move. His Glastonbury studio is minutes from Hartford CT.  The Deep Squat as used by Functional Movement Screens and Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) has been found to be a useful test to gather information on a golfer’s preparedness for the game. In their research, TPI has found several correlations between the Deep Squat and the GOLF SWING. They find that it is almost impossible for a golfer who cannot perform the Deep Squat correctly to maintain posture throughout the swing (Loss of Posture), or to avoid thrusting “their lower bodies toward the golf ball and raise their torsos up during the downswing (Early Extension)”.

They further add, “Foremost, research has shown that any limitation in performing a full deep overhead squat can force a player to early extend during the downswing. These limitations may alter a good address position and force players to change their spinal posture throughout the golf swing.” In addition, good performance on the Deep Squat test has recently been found to a predictor of the ability of a track and field athlete to reach a new PERSONAL BEST throughout a season. The ability to Deep Squat also plays an important role in many everyday activities. For those who have trouble with the Deep Squat, Dr. Greg Rose of the Titleist Performance Institute demonstrates an exercise that can help correct the Deep Squat for those who have the ability, but need some cueing to perform it correctly.

As you watch Dr. Rose perform this exercise you will see him demonstrate among other things, adequate motion of the shoulders, thoracic spine, hips and ankles. If you do not posses these attributes, then this exercise would be a poor choice for you. For these reasons it is important to have a professional screen your movement patterns and help you determine what movements are appropriate for you. At Movement Training by Design, you can train your body to adopt the correct posture and movements needed to improve your golf swing or just move better.
